University of Washington STEMsub Academy (Summer 2024):
The University of Washington STEMsub is a federally-funded outreach program in the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity that helps low-income and potential first-generation college students excel in high school, get accepted to college, and graduate with a STEM degree. The goal of the summer program is to help prepare students for the demands of college and advance their academic and personal development. As a mathematics instructor for the Summer Academy, I prepared curriculum and instructional materials for Statistics & Linear Algebra classes during the six-week program.
In Linear Algebra course, each student was required to submit a written project on a topic of their choice, detailing their motivation to learn Linear Algebra. In order to make students' learning experience more engaging and relevant to their major/intended area of study, I decided to include a written project as part of the course requirements. By the end of the semester, students were required to submit an essay describing their motivation to take multivariable calculus. The submitted projects spanned across multiple areas including biology, economics, physics and chemistry, and I was truly impressed by the quality of the work.
